How to get started with Ecosia Chat

Ecosia Chat appears in your navigation bar above your search results.

  1. Click on AI Chat
  2. A separate window will open
  3. Accept the terms of service and privacy policy to start. Please note that since Ecosia Chat is powered by ChatpGPT, information you share in the chat will be sent to OpenAI. We will not, however, share any of your personal data (like your IP address). 

Which language model is being used?

Ecosia Chat is based on GPT 4.0 powered by OpenAI (the same provider behind ChatGPT). While your input is sent to OpenAI for processing, your personal data (like your IP address) is not shared with them. Ecosia Chat answers are limited to data until 2023.

What are Green Answers?

Green Answers are a feature that, when activated, provides information with a stronger "green" context. This means you'll receive eco-friendly tips, brand suggestions, and habit suggestions that are more environmentally conscious.

What are hallucinations and how to deal with them?

Sometimes the AI might provide incorrect, outdated, or made-up information. This is called a hallucination. This is due to the nature of the AI model which creates answers based on existing patterns of language from its sources. It cannot verify the accuracy of the resulting information.

Keep in mind: : 

  • Always double-check important facts
  • Use the feedback button to report misleading or unhelpful answers

How to delete the chat history?

Your chat history is saved locally in your browser so you can continue past conversations.

You can delete it anytime directly from your browser settings.

Are your conversations private?

Yes, with limitations:

  • Ecosia does not share your personal data (like IP address) with OpenAI
  • Chat content is sent to OpenAI and stored for up to 30 days
  • Your data is not used to train the AI

Please avoid entering any personal or sensitive information.

How to turn off Ecosia Chat?

Currently, you cannot disable Ecosia Chat. However, it only becomes active if you click on the AI Chat tab. If you don’t open it, it stays inactive.
