How to use advanced search operators on Ecosia

To effectively search and get the results you’re looking for you can use advanced search operators to refine your search.

What are search operators?

Search operators are short commands that help you narrow down your search results for example, to a specific website or file type.

Because Ecosia uses different search providers, some operators may work differently depending on which provider is powering your results.

Which operators can I use?

You can explore the full list of supported operators by our search result providers here:

A few examples you can try:

  • site:example.com → only shows results from that website
  • filetype:pdf → finds PDF files
  • "climate change" → searches for an exact phrase

How can I tell which provider I’m using?

Your search results may look slightly different depending on the provider. You can check your Ecosia search settings to see which one is currently active.

The used operator is not filtering correctly?

  • If an operator doesn’t work as expected, it may not be supported by your current provider.
  • Try adjusting your query or testing it with both linked operator lists above.
